U3, or the U-3 unemployment rate, is the most commonly reported rate of unemployment in the United States and represents the number of people actively seeking a job. The U-6 rate, or U6, includes discouraged, underemployed, and unemployed workers in the country. U-3 is the headline unemployment rate generally reported in the media: People who are able to work, ready to work, and have looked for work in the past four weeks. This corresponds the most closely to the definition of unemployment we started with.
