Oil pastels are spreading well on dry medium. Oil pastels never completely dry so they will remain a bit soft, that is why framing is the best option. I like painting with oil pastels because of the softness and the creamy texture you can get, especially when mixing colors or layering colors. It does not change colour after application like other mediums do (watercolours lighten, acrylics darken) . Oil pastels are very different than these conventional dry pastels. They are made from beeswax, pigments and other chemicals and have a waxy crayon like character. They cannot be combined with soft or hard pastels as they would create a slick surface that would prohibit proper adhesion. Oil Pastels are a Unique Medium Oil Pastels are truly a unique medium, and it can take some practice to learn to work with them. Don’t expect greatness right away. Depending on the amount of binder used you can get either soft or hard chalk pastels. The more binder is used, the harder the pastel stick. Oil pastels on the other hand have an oil based binder. Oil pastels are a very unique drawing medium. You can draw like with regular pastels but you can also do things like use solvents and mix colors with a brush together. You can mix oil paint with oil pastels, but the oil paints should go on first (underneath the oil pastels). Sketch your composition at smaller scale first.
