Despite the country's meteoric GDP growth rate (about 9%), poverty in India is still pervasive; especially in rural areas where 70% of India’s 1.2 billion population live. It is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and yet its wealth is hardly redistributed across the population. POVERTY and DEVELOPMENT Multidimensional Poverty Index: India halves poverty in 10 years. A new report shows the percentage of Indians living in poverty is half what it was a decade ago. This is a list of States and Union Territories of India ranked according to poverty as on 16 September 2013. The list is compiled from the Annual Report of Reserve Bank of India published in 2013. The rank is calculated according to the percentage of people below poverty-line and is based on MRP-consumption.
